CanonRumors.com is reporting that they’ve been told Canon is going to make a new PRO level Canon 50mm f1.4L. The big news is that it’ll be priced around $600 to $700 USD, which puts it at half the price, or less, of the Canon 50mm f1.2L.
The new Canon 50mm f1.4L is supposed to be faster to focus, namely due to some new innovations in weight and focusing system design.
It’s also said to possibly have better optical performance due to some advancements in the glass coatings and the glass itself. Very welcome news! I’m always happy when a good lens gets even better!
The existing Canon 50mm f1.4 is set to be discontinued, according to the rumor. Makes sense if a new one is coming out to replace it.
Even CanonRumors wasn’t sure what to make of this rumor. They say they haven’t heard anything about it prior to this.
I will say that the existing Canon 50mm f1.4 lens has been a bit of a crap shoot for a lot of photographers. Mine was fine, but I know quite a few people who have gone through more than one due to the lens pretty much falling apart from use.
Optical quality on my old Canon 50mm f1.4 was great. I had no issues, and I don’t recall hearing too much about anyone else having any. Of course, the build quality was enough of a problem for many, so at least it had good optics.
I’d welcome the 50mm f1.4 being bumped up to “L” status. The small price hike is fine with me as long as it comes with L status. I love 50mm’s, so I’m always happy to see improvements in them.
Let’s hope this rumor comes true!
