I love 50mm primes. Love ‘em! Love ‘em! Love ‘em!
Canonrumors has reported they’ve received information that a new Canon 50mm f1.4 is one the way.
A new Canon 50mm f1.4 is GREAT news. The existing Canon 50mm f1.4 is good, but has its flaws. Many shooters have found it doesn’t hold up to extended use. I know of several people whose Canon 50mm f1.4 has literally fallen apart from use, and note I said use, not abuse.
Likewise, I know of several shooters who have had to go through several samples to get a sharp one that focused accurately. Not good. Especially since we’re talking about a prime here. Not only that, the 50mm is one of the easiest primes to make. It should work perfectly.
However, for the price, if you get a good one, the Canon 50mm f1.4 is a stellar performer.
So, if Canon is releasing a new, up-dated version, it’s welcome news. Welcome if the quality gets better. Welcome if the price doesn’t go up, at least not too much.
