First Look: StuffIt Deluxe 2010 for Mac

In September Smith Micro Software announced StuffIt Deluxe 2010 for the Mac. For those of you who’ve been using a Mac long enough you probably remember StuffIt. It began as a simple compress/decompress application that has grown into a full-fledged, feature rich software package. And, it also began with 15-year-old Raymond Lau back in the 80s. Just before he began student life at MIT Lau worked out a deal with Aladdin Systems. Now, StuffIt is part of the family of Smith Micro.

What really caught our eye on this new iteration is the StuffIt Connect Service. With your new upgrade or purchase you also get a free 2GB account that, according to your Preference Settings, compress or archive your data and then uploads those very large files to the StuffIt Connect Service servers. E-mail is then sent to your desired recipient with a secure download link. Several options are available letting your create a password, deletion date, and so on.

All StuffIt Deluxe 2010 features are easily accessed via an icon in the menu bar. It doesn’t get much simpler than this. There’s no worry whether you or your intended recipient can FTP or if an email attachment is too large for delivery.

While we haven’t tried every feature in this new version we can easily say that it’s been a while since StuffIt really grabbed out attention outside of the StuffIt Expander app that is commonplace on our computers. StuffIt Deluxe 2010 appears to be a winner. We’ve included the press release so that readers can get a good idea of what this new version can do and can even visit Smith Micro for more information. Retail price for StuffIt Deluxe 2010 is $79.99 and an upgrade is $29.99.

PRESS RELEASE

SMITH MICRO SOFTWARE LAUNCHES STUFFIT DELUXE 2010 FOR MAC FEATURING NEW STUFFIT CONNECT SERVICE

StuffIt Makes It Easy for Anyone to Share, Secure and Store Photos, Music and Other Files with a New Cloud-Based File Transfer Service

ALISO VIEJO, CA – September 28, 2009 – Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI) Productivity and Graphics Group today announced the availability of StuffIt Deluxe 2010 for Mac. The new Snow Leopard-compatible release includes StuffIt Connect, a new cloud-based file transfer service that lets users share large files without the hassle of email attachments or FTP.

StuffIt continues to provide best-in-class compression technology, and includes Smith Micro’s industry leading patented compression methods designed to provide pixel-perfect compression of image files, audio files, PDFs and Microsoft Office documents. StuffIt works with virtually all files and compression formats, such as zip, to satisfy all users’ personal and professional needs and ensure that all their photos, music, videos, PowerPoint presentations and other large files are shared or stored securely.

StuffIt Deluxe 2010 eliminates the constraints of email attachments by automatically redirecting large files to the new StuffIt Connect web service. Recipients receive invitations via email that contain a link to the hosted file, which lets them download shared files quickly and easily. Users can access and create invitations to share content from any Internet-connected device, including iPhones and other smartphones. StuffIt Connect protects files with powerful 512bit RC4 encryption technology and offers users the ability to further protect download links with password access to ensure files can only be opened by the intended recipient.

Creative professionals such as advertising executives, graphic designers and photographers can use StuffIt as their personal assistant to prevent unexpected and sometimes lengthy delays in sending files, reduce the risk of losing valuable information and end the worrying that confidential data is unprotected. For example, a busy advertising agency can use the new StuffIt Connect to share large files with multiple designers, musicians and other colleagues at a moment’s notice without the limitations of email attachments, FTP connections or overnighting critical data.

For professional and hobbyist photographers alike, image quality, delivery and storage are critical issues for the thousands of images typically housed on a hard drive. Photographers know that bandwidth is an important cost element that drives the economics of their business, and a 30 percent reduction in the size of the package provided by StuffIt’s patented JPEG compression technology delivers real-time resource savings. StuffIt uses exclusive patent-protected technology to compress images to the minimum possible size without losing a single pixel of data. New StuffIt plug-ins allows users to save time by exporting multiple images from ubiquitous applications, such as iPhoto and Aperture.

“Over the past 20 years, Smith Micro has worked to develop StuffIt into the most advanced compression and encryption solution and so much more,” said Matthew Covington, Senior Director, Product Management of Smith Micro Software “Our newest feature, StuffIt Connect, is designed to meet the increasing demand from individual and corporate users who want a fast, secure information transfer service to send large files and to ensure delivery to the right person at the right time.”
