WFT-E3 on a 40d connection problems

I have a 40d and purchased the WFT-e3. the unit offers both wired and WiFI connections, and I wish to use it in wifi mode.

I have 2 scenarios i want to use it in, but both will use a Belkin N1 router to give me the range I need.

Scenario 1 (and the one I'm testing learning)
Sony Vaio Laptop running XP Pro, and (now) pixagent 2.0 standard.

I've tried the XP FTP program and the pixagent and get error 41 FTP connection failure with the router either as a router or as an access point. as an access point I dont get to the FTP failure as I get DHCP failure. trying the unit wired is no joy either.

Scenario 2 (but untried or tested)
In an event trailer the Belkin router will be attached to a PC running Winserver 2003.

Alternatively , it could connect to the same Sony Vaio laptop but the desktop running win server would need to access the data (along with 12 viewing stations
