FTP software

I have been using fetch for a number of years now and want to check out some other options. I remember a article on RG forums a while back about a ftp droplet for Macs, but cannot find it in the archives or forums.
Does anyone know where to find it?
Any other real world experience with a simple ftp software would also be appreciated.

Rob

I don't have your solution, Rob.

Can I piggyback on your thread and ask for any Windows software as well please.

Re: FTP software

Tony

There are lots of great options for Windows...

One of my favorites is Webdrive (www.webdrive.com) -- it's better than an FTP client -- what it does is make an FTP site appear to your applications (such as photoshop!) as a local disk drive. Very cool.

Or, there is Powerdesk -- (http://www.v-com.com/product/PowerDesk_Pro_Home.html) which is a nice file manager application with a built in FTP client. It also works very well.

These are just two... there really are countless others. Webdrive is unique, however -- whatever you end up with, be sure you look into that one along the way.

Ron

Well you can do this with Windows itself - just go to "my network places" and create a place with an ftp url. For just moving files I find it much handier than an ftp client as all login etc is transparent and you just drag and drop files. Create a shortcut and it's just another folder on your desktop.

Re: FTP software

Thanks Ron and Don,

I'll look at the suggested bespoke software and I've already followed Don's suggestion of putting a shortcut to my FTP server on my Desktop.

I'm in the infancy stages of creating a simple web site and I've bought a copy of Frontpage to ease me along. Frontpage has its own 'publish' facility and that seems pretty intuitive as you have a local web creating file area and you can see your FTP area in another bit of the screen. It's only drag and drop made for dummies, but it seems to work for me.

As I self teach myself to create a web site I am trying to drag along an artist friend of mine who is totally new to computers. So any bits of software that avoid me having to explain what we all take for granted in Windows interfaces is good for keeping the phone calls down.

Thanks again.

Tony

Re: FTP software

There's YummyFTP:

There's CaptainFTP (with the widget thingy):
http://captainftp.xdsnet.de/

There's FUGU but it may have trouble with non-secure ftp:
http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/

Here's discussion at Apple about Fetch vs. Transmit:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread....85740&#1985740

Here's a good MacWorld article comparing a few Mac FTP clients:
http://www.macworld.com/2005/07/revi...ents/index.php

Though I still use Fetch, consensus is that Transmit picks up where Fetch leaves off.
I'm apparently must not be using Fetch in a challenging environment to where Transmit would benefit me.
If it ain't broke ...
