Re: FTP software

Relative to a windows based system.

I downloaded and have been using a product from http://www.ipswitch.com/

It was recomended by the ISP of my website, and was easy to setup and use. It has a very good set of tutorials, and I was up, running, downloading and working within an hour. Albeit several hours to upload all my galleries.

I cant say how it stacks up against others, as this was the first and only ftp software I've used, but I like it. It has a free thirty day trial download as well, then its like 59 or 69 dollars for a authorization key to continue using it.

Re: FTP software

Transmit is very straightforward, works perfectly well and although I do not have experience with other programs, don't see the need to look at others, this does the job and is not very costly. Mind you, use it just for putting up galleries and transferring/picking up the odd largish file.

Re: FTP software

I use Filezilla - open source ftp client. www.sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla

Not the greatest interface, but it works weel if you're used to it, and it's free!

Give it a try - nothing to lose!

regards

Gareth

Re: FTP software

Don,

What seems to me the advantage of WebDrive is that you can alter files with a prog like Frontpage without copying them from the FTP server to your home PC.

I've created the shortcut to my FTP site on my desktop and can copy files in and out of it. But I don't seem to be able to get them to be read and written back by Frontpage. Am I missing something?

It is cutting out this step of moving off and back on to the FTP server that seems worthwhile and that is what WebDrive seems to be offering.

Thanks,

Tony

Re: FTP software

Ron,

Thanks for the intro to WebDrive. First 24 hours of use indicate it is precisely what I need.

I have Frontpage, but for someone wanting to get into Web design less expensively I'd suggest buying WebDrive and designing with the free Nvu which is a pretty good Frontpage look alike.

In my early days I find navigation and getting the links accurate is more important than clever design. My view will change as this becomes more familiar and I aspire to a smarter site, I am sure.

Re: FTP software

Not a lot of interest in WebDrive apparently. But I'll bash on if only for the archives.

It seems that WebDrive does require a good internet link. I've been getting into quite a muddle using it in my studio where my WiFi signal is at its lower limit. WebDrive will fool you into thinking it has transferred files and has actually failed.

I even wonder quite how much it likes/hates WiFi at all. My laptop has a good WiFi signal but even it seems lesss reliable with WebDrive than my hard wired office PC and its commercial bandwidth.

All of which makes experimenting even more experimental. The lesson I am learning is to trust nothing and to make sure that all critical index files are copied safely to another folder.
