Re: \"generic\" WiFi antennas for Nikon WT-1

Thanks for confirming what my eyes were telling me. I will grind down the plastic screw on connector to reduce the depth and report back.

I also bought the Zytel G220 soft access point that operates through the USB 2.0 port in order to get portable in the field infrastructure G transmission rates. Haven't completed teting there either but when I connect to my indrstructure router in the house it doesn't give me near the signal strength as my Linksys PCMIA connection. Makes me think I'll lose range to the cameras as well.

Re: \"generic\" WiFi antennas for Nikon WT-1

Success!

I used the circular rotating head of a bench belt sander to grind down the (Metal) threaded attachment knob of the Linksys 7dB SMA antenna to decrease the depth inside to the connection. I kept rotating the antenna as I applied pressure and had to cool it frequently. Actually I ground a bit too far and fully screwed on I do not have as much thread bite as I could. Stop when, fully screwed on and solidly tightened, you start to see spacing between the knob and the camera body. But it is still solid and to my testing on a rainy day when I really can't take the camera outdoors it seems to work just fine. I could test it the length of my house, about 70-80 feet line of sight and even through walls and in ad-hoc mode (11 Mbs) it takes 11 seconds to upload a max size jpg from a Nikon D2X. With the regular antenna right next to the laptop the usual speed is about 7-8 seconds This is with a fresh battery in the camera and uploading to my laptop which has a Linksys wireless PCMIA adapter operating in B mode. When/if it ever stops raining I'll take the whole thing outside and see what the max range is. Anyone with a Nikon dedicated antenna want to weigh in with their reported range?

Sorry about the confusion, I've been using some older SMA antenae which were small enough to fit onto the unit - playing around with one of the RP-SMA antena from a D-Link router seems to confirm what was written above. I'll look into this and see what I can find out.

Its called "don't let the suckers off the hook by Canon and Nikon". Wi-Fi stuff is cheap and standard so lets make it incompatible and charge 10X the price.

Re: \"generic\" WiFi antennas for Nikon WT-1

I've modded a regular 'Rubber duck' antenna for my wt-2 - see below

I just dremmeled about 2 mm off the end, The thread seems to hold. I'm using this with a 120 degree 12 Dbi sector antenna. So far, good results, but not really tested this combination to the full. I wqas going to use it at an event this weekend, but the location meant that I was based at th ebottonm of a slope, and I couldn't get the antenna high enough. Over flat ground though I'm hoping for 300-400 m range.

regards
