I just got the wft-e1 and I also bought a airportexpress to transmit into my laptop when I am outside of the studio. The setup works great, except when I am away from a power source to plug the airportexpress into. I have done searches on the internet into battery powered routers but haven't found any. So far, I have only found inverters with batteries that I can plug the airportexpress into so I can use when I am not around power. The power drain from the airportexpress is pretty low.

Your best bet is to look at a device like the D-Link
pocket router. It doesn't have a battery, however it can be powered via a USB connection so you can have it run off of your laptop's battery (note that the USB cable only supplies power, you still need to connect the laptop via wireless or ethernet connection to communicate with the device). As mentioned, the ZyXel G220 is also another option for Windows users, however AFAIK they don't have Mac drivers so it doesn't help Powerbook users.

Has anybody used their wft-e1 with a laptop when they aren't around power to use a router. How about a direct connection from the wft-e1 directly into the laptop using a crossover cable????

Certainly using a crossover cable with the WFT-E1 will be by far the fastest way of transferring images as long as the cable isn't a problem (with newer computers you might be able to use a straight through cable). For wireless, the D-Link G730AP or ZyXel G-220/AG-225H units will give you full 802.11g speed in the field. Naturally, if all else fails an ad-hoc connection will get you going without additional hardware, however you'll need to live with 802.11b speeds in that case.
