Yes, it can, but I'm shocked to hear that it's affecting your system performance. Are you booting from your external 1394 drives? I installed it on my home system and I've had no issues at all.
You should be able to remove it by going Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, then open Add/Remove Programs. On SP2, you'll also need to click the "Show updates" check box at the top of the Add/Remove Programs window. Find this hotfix (I think it's 885222), click on it and click the remove button.
Do you have a spyware checker like Adaware or MSFT's beta AntiSpyware?

Paul, I do have to say that now I've got a clean install of xp my machine is running very well.
I just tried the firewire card reader and it doesn't disappear, mind you I've not been using my machine for photo work much lately, been cleaning and reorganizing my cluttered life, so one pull of the card doesn't mean its not going to happen.
I am using a 3 port firewire pci card and right now when I turn on the second of three daisy chained devices I usually have to do it twice or 3 times. The first device starts right away, the second (middle one) one either has to be turned a couple times or if I turn the last device then the pc instantly sees the middle one. I think I can resolve this just by plugging one of these 3 directly to the 3rd pci port directly which sounds like a simple fix, I'll just leave 2 drives daisy chained....

David, I swiched hard drives ( I keep a backup with all programs installed) and the backup drive is performing back to normal.
Yes, I do use AD-AWARE PRO, as well as Zone Alarm Pro. My AntiVirus is AVG by Grisoft, the Pro version. These were all turned off when I made the hotfix. My biggest problem after the fix was the way my ACDsee vers 5 performed. It totally froze or crashed within seconds of doing anything. My photoshop (vers 5) took over 3 minutes to load, the mouse stuttered across the screen and any drag and drop along with it. My email client wouldn't load (Thunderbird vers 1) and I got a blue screen once when opening ?? program warning me of a parity error. It did not occur again.
Now, with the backup drive loaded, I'm just copying my data over and going on. I'm going to reformat the other drive and get on with things.
It would be interesting to know why this did anything. My external drive wasn't even hooked up at the time. It was at work. I just I should have just left things be, huh?

Glad to hear you have it (spyware/firewall/AV) covered. Check to be sure your AV definitions are up to date, as a new (uncaught) virus could definitely cause poor performance.
Before writing off the 1394 hotfix, I'd also recommend running a memory test on your computer to identify the bad DIMM. Parity memory errors like that should not be ignored. Unless you live in Denver, or other mile-high locations, parity errors aren't likely to happen unless the part is bad or going bad.
You can start by going into your BIOS setup, and switching from fast boot to normal boot, which will take the time to do a more extensive memory test.
There may also be a diagnostics disk that came with your computer, or a memory diag program that may be downloadable from your manufacturer's web site.

That's good news. I'd urge you to continue in that direction so you get to nothing but 1-1 connections, even if you need to spend the $50 for another PCI 1394 card. Having nothing daisy chained eliminates a huge number of potential headaches.
Cheers...David
