right to print from cd...revokable...?

i was just thinking out a series of events in my mind...never mind with the explaination. i had a question from it, if i shoot a wedd and give the client a cd and release to print them, can i revoke that right from them to print them? (assuming i didnt transfere ©). would it need to be accompanied by a refund...?

Legally it would depend on the contract you have with them, same for the refund. If you don't specify a time limit or that rights/licenses are revocable it doesn't mean they aren't, but realistically and practically, no, I don't think you can do much about it now.

Legally,

I think the best way to handle such scenarios is to just use a program that protects the images from being lifted. If they want another copy for grandma or mother, they can order another from you. Some of my customers have voiced intent to buy DVD'S they can play back on their tv rather than printed images. I intend to charge accordingly.

I think it would have a lot to do with the reason you would revoke the permission. If it's for cause, i.e., they somehow use the images in a way not intended or in accordance with the agreement, that would work. But if not, then you could be in an awkward situation.

Re: right to print from cd...revokable...?

How would you every police that?? Even if you said it was for a term of 100 days, how would you know that they printed from it 101 days? Also, would they just not copy the DVD to their hard drive? The only scenario I can justify is if their payment bounced. To eliminate that, I will not accept final payment by check, it's gotta be cash, debit, CC.

Random... Thoughts... Late... At... Night...

Since so many are now web-connected, how about an encrypted disc running a program that calls home (i.e., to your computer) to ask permission to display an image.

Maybe your permission allows the image to be displayed/used for 1 month, after which it has to call home again.

In a net-connected world there are many possibilities.

Sorry for the bit of free association here...
