Re: Free wedding photographer

Hey, buddy! Want to make some easy money? Go shoot a wedding on saturday, just give 'em the disk. It's fun and profitable!

I don't think it will last. The fun will wear off soon enough. It may last a couple of more years though.

Or perhaps it is a trend that is here to stay. The music business is still working to figure things out. The new Eagles album wasn't released through any record company, but directly to walmart. Small bands use the net to sell directly to consumers. Piracy is (still) rampant.

Perhaps there is some new way to sell wedding photography that will arise. Perhaps wedding photography will go away.

I get calls all the time looking for a 'professional' to come and shoot just the formals. I have yet to get anyone to pay though, even though I quote $100 to $150 for an hour, plus prints, I get no takers. Got one of those calls last night for Jan 5. I have no idea what they think it's worth, or what they want for prints (neither do they when I ask).

Open to suggestions on how to make any money off these calls.

It's not limited to just weddings.

A couple weeks before Christmas I received an e-mail from a young woman who boards her horse at a local barn. She wanted to set up a private session of a friend's horse, when the friend wasn't around, as a surprise gift for the friend. In her message she claimed a couple times, she really; "hoped we could work something out".

Whatever that means.

I replied that I could indeed make myself available, but the price of a private session is $65/hour, usually with a 2 hour minimum. But since I live nearby, I would do it for the one hour charge, plus any prints she ordered.

Never heard from her again. So much for "working something out".

Translation: She was game if I'd grab my bag and jump when the coast was clear. Spend an hour or so setting up the shots, plus more time downloading and proofing them for her onsite. Doing the post, picking up from the lab, and mailing out, for the price of a 5x7 or 8x10.

What was that old REM song? "It's the end of the world as we know it"

Re: Free wedding photographer

The erosion of photography business models is confusing. I keep thinking that if we look at the music business we should be picking up clues about the future of photography. That's about as far as I get...

Meanwhile I'm buying vinyl LPs on eBay because on a modern turntable they sound sooooo much better than CDs.

Re: Free wedding photographer

I just received this email from last week's wedding client.

Quote:
GREAT album - these look soooo fantastic, Alan!!! You're a super editor as well as a talented photographer. And I'm really sorry we could not meet up one more time with you to say thanks, again, before we left town. This is just fabulous.
She is talking about what I refer to as her Web Wedding Album. Perhaps this is something we can all of us market--kind of a MySpace.com for brides.

I know it's really just web proofs, but why not build it up a bit and charge a little more for it? For many of my clients these web galleries have replaced the wedding album. It's the one thing besides a disc of their photos that every client wants.

If you're curious, you can view the photos HERE. I'm open to hearing ideas about how to market this kind of thing. It's more or less included in my prices, but maybe there is a better way.

Do the rest of you do this for your clients? How do you price it? Do they pay extra for it? Do you charge for web hosting?

-Alan

Re: Free wedding photographer

I put all the proofs on the web the thursday following the wedding, and hand out referral wallets at the reception to promote the website.

I get good feedback, but I do it mostly for self promotion, some sales (not much..open to suggestions on improving it - it's about $35/sale, 3 sales/wedding maybe) and to make it easy on the bride (and me) for her to pick her wedding photos for the album.

I sell it to her on the premise of picking the album photos and her friends and relatives can go there instead of bothering her for pictures.

Is that the best way? Probably not. I know most photogs use a site like this, but I don't see anyone extollling the perfect way to succeed at it like you do for posing or lighting or RAW vs JPG, etc.
