I bought the black People Popper and use it for on site portraits. It is easy to carry and set up. The black fabric soaks up light so even if your light and subject are close to the background you still get pure black. I also have an extra length of material that I can add on for full length photos but I had to buy the fabric locally.
You bought black so it may not work, but have you ever tried to hit the background with light so you get some texture, wrinkles, etc? I always thought the People Popper (or the Background in a Bag) sounded like a great idea, but I don't spend $100+ on experiments like that.

Better hope you don't have to slam on the brakes suddenly and it flies off and spears someone...

There most me a fold out or collapsible rod for this purpose, but no one seems to pointed one out to me yet.

My Manfrotto 9' pole collapses to about 4' or thereabouts.

I have a Savage 9' portable stand system, and the pole is in three sections and collapses to about 3'. The pole and two side stands fit into a carry bag. Works well for me with the 9' paper rolls.
