Thanks Bob - looks ideal. Only problem now is trying to find a supplier in the UK!

Re: Portable backdrop recommendations

Let us know if you can source it in the UK, please Dave,

I used one of those really large Lastolite jobbies that are spring loaded. However, it does feel unstable using just one vertical stand and I reckon the curtain idea could be a better bet.

Re: Portable backdrop recommendations

At the Nikon roadshow in Bristol, I spoke to the Lastolite rep and had a play with what they call (I think) a Hi-Lite backdrop (effectively two of the expandable backgrounds joined together so you can fire a flash into it to give a HiLite effect). As it is free standing, it actually works quite well as a portable backdrop and has velcro so you can attach other colours to the front. Seemed pretty stable and the additional colour backdrops will be out in the next few weeks.

Dave

p.s. Also had a play with a D3 - yes the noise is as good as they say.....

Re: Portable backdrop recommendations

I've had people suggest using a rod atop my light stands for a crossbar before - the problem with that is that the bar itself would have to be 9-10' long. Try fitting that into most vehicles in order to get to the venue... that's not exactly portable. Strap it to the roof? Better hope you don't have to slam on the brakes suddenly and it flies off and spears someone...

There most me a fold out or collapsible rod for this purpose, but no one seems to pointed one out to me yet.

Re: Portable backdrop recommendations

iron the wrinles out of the muslin ands taple the BK to a carboard carpet tube, pole through center, attach with grip head by matthews/avenger. they come with a C stand or hi roller series stand.

i would reccomend the medium hi roller stands, A310 stand by avenger. 14ft tall, 5ft leg spread, heavy, but wont keil over. solid 1.5+ inch diameter.

not light weight though, but will last forever.

Have you looked at something like this?

Adjustable Background Holder Crossbar

You may also be able to find tube/bars that fit together, the same way boom poles fit together in sections, that you can assemble quickly on site, or only use in short sections as needed.
