8 cent prints

A client called me today to complain that the discs of high-res images I sent her (weeks ago) are blank (not unformatted, but blank). After I literally put the phone down for 5 minutes while she complained, I found out that the reason she is unhappy is that she is sorting through the pictures so that she can print up some 4x6s locally - and she seems to think I was doing it on purpose to get her to buy prints from Pictage (at $6 apiece) rather than doing it locally (which she can get for 8 cents apiece). And, of course, whe wants me to overnight her new discs.

So I had to burn her news discs, including one with just her Pictage selections (which I had to print off of the screen and then use as a guide to find the files she wants). I mailed them Priority Mail.

I have had my local modeling agency ask me why all the CDs that people give them are blank while mine aren't. After some troubleshooting, I found that if you are using programs like Roxio and don't FINALIZE the CD, that the CDs will not read information on them if they do not have the SAME version of compatable version of Roxio on their computer.

That was a problem in the old days - but it shouldn't be anymore. These are iso 9660 dvds burned with Ashampoo. But I also sent her a finalized cd.

Still can't figure out her problem reading my dvds. I sent her finalized ones. She can read the cd, but not the dvds. She has an HP with a dvd burner, but I don't know how old it is. I sent 8x discs, but I didn't think that should make much difference.

You know this discussion is starting to make me think maybe we should put a clause in our contracts to the effect that we furnish digital files in "industry standard format" or something. It's only going to get worse as Sony and BlueRay or whatever it is start fighting it out. It's the VHS, Beta thing all over again. Most pro photo labs can handle all CD's and DVD's but the local drug store and Costco probably can't. I want to please my clients, but maybe there should be a limit.
Any thoughts???
