Hi Ben - Good to see an Aussie on the Australian section of this site. What's your average price/package in Canberra?

And... why in the world would you link all those other photographers from your site? Once you have them on your site, you do NOT want them to leave, ESPECIALLY to look at another photographer. Why *invite* them to look at someone else?

I'm quite happy to be judged against other photographers for price/content and (believe it or not) I get extra hits on my site (and therefore extra potential customers) from people who have keyed in those other photogs in a search. As I'm relatively new, I figure that (having the other photo links on the site) gets me in front of people that may not know about the services I offer. It's like those European towns where all the furniture sellers are in one street, all the cake shops are in another etc. I think the psychology is that you might go to a particular area to deal with one shop, but then you'll see exactly what you want in another.

Well, I can't speak for other photrographers & the market in general, but my average is around $2000-$3000.
I have a minumim of $1500 for the off-season & a $2500 minimum during peak season, where I'm ususally completely booked up to a year in advance.

Ben.

Re: Digital weddings

None Aussies, like Mark, David B. and I shouldn't be converting Australian Dollars to our currencies, Australia is neither a sterling nor $US economy so the price is $A not £Sterling nor $US and we cannot make comparison, since we don't spend $A where we live.

Having said that $A725 does sound a little on the low side, even if you only count the hours on the day, that is less than $A200 per hour with all the post production time and images (intellectual property) thrown in.

At this point I would refer you to Josh (dragonfly) our marketeer extraodinaire and, of course David B and Mark are quite astute business men, but I think you should evaluate what you want out of your business, how much you want to go home with, after all expenses, jiggle that with the number of hours you want to work each week, then come up with a figure that you are comfortable with, assuming you can penetrate the market to that level.

Re: Digital weddings

I am not an Australian photographer but a kiwi. This pricing seems very low. I would guess you are a beginner and not confident to charge more. You should factor in post production time and will likely be revamping your pricing a lot as you get to know the business. Very likely you will learn this your self the first time a A$3000 wedding comes your way and you realise you are locked in to an A$700 job. Same amount of work but you under valued yourself.

In this business you can either compete on quality or price. If you are competing on price you are not competing at all, esp. for a once in a life time event like a wedding. But then again the low end market is usually much easier to please. Just be careful you do not get brides expecting A$5000 quality for the rates you are charging. Re: Digital weddings

You know I thought it was funny... I'm somewhat anti-social, known as a nutter...
for me to agree in principal with all the other opinions in this post... well I hope you get the idea.
700 odd bucks doesn't cover anything you do man.

I'm about to re-start my wedding photography and I can tell you that no-one is gonna take you seriously at that price.
Maybe you are getting the weddings in but how many photos do you need before you've got enough for presentation on the net, pamphlets, buisiness cards etc... I reckon you'd need about twenty five shots to cover all advertising. Whether digital or film it's of no consequence.

When I'm ready to take on the work I intend to come in at around the four thousand dollar mark $4000 as a average package.

Even at four hours, if you can handle the opinionated retards who don't have any idea about what you're doing... if you can cope with a bride turn superbi...(no need to swear), man you're working your talent if you've got any.

It's a free country good luck and good will but think about say having twenty bookings next season at $700 or even five bookings at $4000.

Anyway, what do I know...
