Gay Weddings

Since nobody's posted anything in a week or so, I thougth I'd kick in something for disscussion.

I've shot three gay weddings here in Whistler over the last month. Now that they're legal in Canada, we're getting clients from all over the United States and Canada coming to get married. I'm currious to hear from other Canadian, and I guess New England photographers, how are you marketing for gay weddings, is your style different with a same sex couple, and how has the experience been for you?

Re: Gay Weddings

Dave,

I'm in Masschusetts and waiting for my first one! I'm not really marketing to the gay community as a target but if the chance comes up I'll take it. Have the three that you have done followed the same outline as a traditional wedding? Cake cutting, first dance, parent dances etc???

Re: Gay Weddings

I have been photographing Holy Unions for at least 10 years. I treat them the same as "traditional " weddings. Cake, dance, limo table shots..... all the same.
Have fun and enjoy. If you are like me, you will like them better then the "other' weddings!

Re: Gay Weddings

A couple of months ago a woman (tatoo artist) contacted the studio about photographing her wedding. She told us flat out she was marrying another woman and had asked another photographer to photograph their ceremony.

When he found out it was two women getting married, he went beserk and threatened to picket at their wedding.

We agreed to photograph it and these were two of the nicest ladies one would ever meet. Also spent about twice as much as our normal weddings bring.

Re: Gay Weddings

I haven't done a wedding, but did a portrait of two women. Treated them as a couple - that's what they are. I've had a couple of inquires for weddings, but haven't booked one yet. I'm looking forward to it though.

Re: Gay Weddings

I have to say it's been interesting doing the gay weddings over the last couple of years. Up until recently, it's been pretty quiet, with probably less than 5 same sex weddings a year for me. This year, it's taken a steep upswing, which I chaulk up to simply that it takes a couple of years to decide to get married and plan it out.

It's been mostly female couples, and probably the most striking part of it is that most of the couples have been together for at least 10 years, and some have been together for 20 or 30 years. The last couple I photographed had been together for 32 years, were both in their 60's, and both were grandmothers.

All the same sex weddings I've done have been very low key affairs. I found that the first question that I was getting was 'are you comfortable with a gay wedding?', so I put a page up on my web site with a rainbow flag, and little flash show of some of the gay weddings that I've done. The other point I make is not to make an issue of the gay part of the wedding, as my job is just to take the pictures, not get into political discussions (although I do find the entire thing facinating).

Isn't that what you are doing now, making an issue out of it?
