Re: Gay Weddings

I just don't make an issue out of it when I'm shooting their weddings. I'm interested in seeing what other photographers experiences are, plus I think it's an interesting topic in general.

David,

I did one earlier this year because I’m trying not to be too judgmental not withstanding the half century I have taken up space on this planet which has caused me to adopt certain self-limiting prejudices like being philosophically anti-gay which is confused by my misogynist tendencies cause by being raised during the 60s all mixed in with a liberal arts education and a somewhat fanatical approach to life. All in all my experience wasn’t too unpleasant.

The couple themselves however had a rather tough day of it what with the animosity between the two families, who I sensed harbored a feeling that the other family had some how failed in their parental duties and thus were at fault for leading their child astray. This was particularly true at the reception and as I followed the couple around I could see that they spent an inordinate amount of time putting out forest fires.

The big concern they had was with public affection. They didn’t kiss at the ceremony deferring to a hug instead out of respect for their parents. They did do one kiss in the park but I think I was the only one who witnessed that and obviously who ever they choose to share that photo with.

For the most part it was more work then normal. I have a standard patter that I use when working and it took some concentration on my part to change my terms to suit the situation as well as deciding how to pose the couple. So much of what we do as wedding photographers is based on centuries of gender bias that it was tricky deciding what to do with all the little things that we take for granted. I’m not sure if I would do it again.

Bob
