Color of studio walls?

I now have a room, I'll call it a studio (not the biggest and best but will work for now) that I can paint. It is a small room, 16'x20' with a 9.6' ceiling. It is all white at the moment, is there a preferred color to change it to, an off grey? Egg shell maybe?
Thanks in advance, George

Flat Black, like the inside of a camera. You don't want anything that will reflect light, which will give you colour shifts, or strange shadows. If you don't want to paint it, you might want drape the walls with some black out cloth.

I would echo that flat black is the recommended colour so that you can control every ounce of light that is in there, but most people stick with white.

Re: Color of studio walls?

Personally I use White, my shooting area is a little larger. I use gobos when I need to keep light from spilling onto my subjects. Plus with enough lights, I can light the whole room up and have very nice high key portraits. If you do not have any gobos, make them. 2 4x8 foamcore panels taped together, black fabric on one side and white on the other, this will also double as a nice lightbox. A friend actually goes so far as to glue pipe insulation around the edges, he can then tack white sheets to soften the lightbox effect.

I go with white also. With that size, you should have no problem with reflections from walls. Would you want customers walking into a black room? I often will bounce lights off the walls or ceiling to soften the lighting and white is perfect for that.

I also use white... you just have to make sure that it's a pure white with no colour cast.

Re: Color of studio walls?

The shooting space im my studio is black. I had a kid come in begging me to let him help me with something.......anything. So I said sure, here you go, & he painted the entire room black.....even the ceiling.

Chers,

Paul
