Should I buy a Canon 20D or wait for the 5D

I notice that a lot of members of this forum have already upgraded from the 10D to the 20D for weddings? I'm still in the dark ages using a 10D but ready to upgrade.

My question if anyone can help (and thanks to all those who have provided me with valuable information offline so far) should I buy the 20D? Is it really better than the 10D, can you say why?

Or, should I wait for the 5D, or is this model for the others outside of weddings?

Thanks

Steve

Wait for the 5D, it's not an incremental upgrade, it's a huge upgrade, what's one month more for a camera with double the resolution of your 10D with FF?

I'm surprised that the 5D is more than double the price of the 20D.
That said, the 12 MP resolution will be nice, but it's the full-frame sensor that has me most interested.

The 5D will be great for weddings. When looking at the resolution and the price difference the 5D and 20D are not in the same class. As long as the camera is AVAILABLE when scheduled (key word available, you may want to preorder if you go this route) a one month wait is no time. The question should not be which should I get (money no issue and based upon specs the 5D is clearly better), the question should be which do I need?

If the 5D is anything like the 1Ds then you will need L quality lenses since you won't have the 1.6 crop of the 10D or the 20D. Keep that in mind if you do spend 3k on the 5D and don't already have good lenses you probably won't want to spend another 3k to upgrade to L lenses.

I'm surprised it's less than half the cost of a 1Ds Mk II.

Is a 10D better than a 20D? I'm actually surprised at the question. The 20D has 33% more pixels, and at much lower noise. ISO 800 is very usable, even 1600 with a bit of noise reduction. Auto-focus is much better, with better tracking, a center-point that works more accurately with 2.8 and faster lenses, and more focus points and in more usable locations. Better flash integration and control. Less shutter lag. Etc.

But I do think the 5D would be a better wedding camera. I would wait if you can afford the price delta.
