Church Directories - Workflow & Software (X Post)

(Sorry for those who also read event - crossposted here since it fits BOTH groups - thanks!)

I have been approached by a local church to produce a directory of all their families. This is a large church with about 1000 families. I anticipate about 60% turnout - so about 600 families - and would take the images at the church in a studio setting over the course of 3 weeks? Trying to get the workflow down. I am thinking a greeting station to get their info for the book, then off to the studio for a few snaps, then off to the preview table/order table. I think about 15 min per family? Everything should be about the same - distance to BG, distance to camera, lights, camera settings - so it should be just cookie cutter shots.

Has anyone recently done one of these? I would like to know what the actual turnout is - near the 60% I think?

Also - what percentage of those purchase a package - and what is the average package pricing?

The church wants the programs, and 1 8x10 provide to each person who has their photo taken for the directory. I would then have to display/proof them, have them pick their photos - and try and sell them additional prints to pay my expenses and profit.

What software can you use to quickly proof their images - and tag them for ordering? Anyone have a good piece of software to suggest that would compare like 4-up phots? I could just have a form with all their info on it - and just write the filename, size, and other info on it.

I am thinking of shooting them from the camera, and automatically FTPing them to my viewing station - via D2H wireless. (I LOVE this feature at weddings - it gets all the rave with the people there!)

Any input on this subject would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks

Eric

Re: Church Directories - Workflow & Software (X Post)

Eric, you should check into high volume software solutions like Express Digital or similar to make your life easier and your workflow quicker.

Heard Chris Wunder speak on profitable church directories at PSPA/PMA and recently saw a "bootcamp" being offered soon in just that subject by Marathon Press (who now has a church book div.).

Here's some of the info:
1. Register Now To Attend "Publishing for Profits: Church Directories, Prom Books, Reunion Books" September 20

Marathon Press will be hosting a special day-long workshop Monday, September 20 at the Sheraton Detroit Novi (Haggerty & 8 Mile Roads) in Novi, Michigan - one day prior to the September General Meeting of the DPPA. Registration is just $49 ($29 for DPPA members) and includes complimentary software.

During this intense one-day program, presented by industry expert Chris Wunder, you'll learn how to market yourself, how to create a competitive edge, what to offer, how to package your portrait program and how to publish your directory.

If you are an experienced photographer looking for more business, this seminar can make a big difference in your profitability this year. Space is limited to just 36 photographers so reserve your space now by contacting Linda Varn at (800) 228-0629, x231 or e-mail lindav@marathonpress.net.
