Re: grey cards at weddings

With 1dmk2 I shoot mostly jpeg to date - and even at weddings am happy with awb.

For inside tungton shots - I find photoshops photo filter a perfect way to reduce any orange, but not eradicate completely.

I shoot real candids, so speed is everything. If wanting more accuracy on a group shot, I would use raw and tweak later.

I also lug two bodies, one on each shoulder, so couldn't handle a card/expo anyways.

Regards,
Kev

Re: grey cards at weddings

I've been using an ExpoDisc lately with terrific results. I do a custom WB with this for each lighting change..and the results are generally dead on with my D1X
I do have a Meyers Digital Gray card which I will occasionally stick in a scene as the light changes..but with the ExpoDisc you can also shoot a grey frame to click balance on later, too.

Another neat thing with the Expodisc...I check the cleanliness of my sensor by shooting a grey frame with it. Any junk on the sensor will show up very clearly.
I was skeptical about this tool..but after using it for a while..I very highly recomend it. it's a convenient..always consistent control...especially if you like to use a jpeg workflow.

+1 on the expodisc. Easy, fast and accurate.

Re: grey cards at weddings

Well. perhaps..but..especially with a jpeg workflow..I was completely surprised how much more accurate and pleasing the ExpoDisc color rendition was..compared to any camera preset..even AWB (even with Canon). Camera AWB is easily fooled by mixed light. The ExpoDisc allows you to very accurately select an overriding color bias. I'll typically set up 3 custom WB's beforehand with the ExpoDisc..and switch back and forth on the fly as I need to. An occasional gray frame (shot with the ExpoDisc lets me easily clickbalance later on..if I really have to.
The less post work I do on Jpeg files..the better.

Like I said..I was skeptical, too.

Re: grey cards at weddings

I carry a WHIBAL on my person for unusual lighting situations.. but in the last six weddings (indoor and outdoor) the AWB on my 1ds2 has been spot on. I shoot raw so if i adjusy wb at all it's for effect rather than accuracy.

Re: grey cards at weddings

Please correct me if wrong . . .

But I thought expodisc needed to be pointed at the light source to take it's reading. Thus with flash or other mixed light (window and tungston etc) this might pose an interesting dilema . . .

How do you guys use your expodiscs ??? Is it a subjective view each time ???

Regards,
Kev
