| Re: grey cards at weddings ExpoDisc can be used either as incident (pointed at the light source)..or reflective (at the subject). In the studio..I generally set WB by pointing at the lights. On a candid jobs with oncamera flash..I set WB thru the ExpoDisc pointing at the subject set to take into account the on camera flash..and mix of whatever ambient light I want to affect the shot.
I generally shoot a few scenes with a WhiBal or Meyers Gray card in them as a reference to make slight adjustments in PS later if needed. Sometimes ambient light shifts..sun goes behind the clouds..etc.
I've compared Auto WB to WB set by ExpoDisc many times. At least on a D1X..camera AWB is seldom accurate.
ExpoDisc gets a funny response from people, especially the "Pringles lid" camp.. :-). Dosen't "screw on"...like someone earlier complained ...BTW; slips on the lens firmly..held in by neat little precision ball-detent spacers. Very easy to slip on..stays on firmly..very easy to remove. I get the distinct feeling that a lot of Expo dectractors have never held one in their hands. Someone else assured me it was made of "waxy paper" :-).
I've made comparison side by side shots using WB set by a Myers Gray card, WhiBal set-up, Pringles lid, camera presets..all compared to WB for the same shot set with an ExpoDisc. There really was no comparison.
The Myers Gray card and WhiBal WB shots looked great..by themselves. But when I viewed them side by side with same shots set by ExpoDisc..the ExpoDisc colors were brighter..richer..and the other shots looked pale and flat by comparison. ExpoDisc WB versions of the shots had a decidely more neutral feel to them.
Like I said..I was skeptical at first. |
