canon 5000 / 6000 / 8500 ?

I saw a shooter doing instant prints at a bar mitzvah this weekend using the canon ip 5000

he loved the printer ....said it was the fasted printer he ever used.

I'm teaching a class this summer and need to buy a printer...I'm looking at the 5000 and the
canon 8500. How do they compare?

What is the cost per print regarding ink for 8x10s?

Another printer i'm looking at is the canon 6000 only because it has it's on monitor
and i could leave it out for students to print 24/7 without leaving out my laptop.

Any comments?

Thanks...Arnie Adler

Re: canon 5000 / 6000 / 8500 ?

We've had the ip5000 since fall and LOVE it!

It's a super fast little printer that produces great looking photo prints, especially when using Canon Photo Paper Plus or Pro. We've used it for a couple smaller holiday events, doing only 5x7 units with our express digital software and it did them all very well. I dont recall what we figured the exact average cost per print (oem paper/ink) was, but it was under a buck per 5x7, and I round it up and call it a dollar even when figuring our costs to make it easier. Carts are easy to change and head alignment issues have not happened at all.

We're actually planning to use it on site this spring as a proof printer on a few small event/school sites as a test. I've used OEM Canon ink and paper for final prints only as there was some talk about epson vs. canon print life and the best life available for the canons seemed when using OEM ink/paper. I have used some generic ink in testing for the proof use and things looked good enough for proof use and cost was super cheap! Compared to the epson carts, ink (even the OEM) is cheaper and IMHO, lasts a lot longer. Plus, you can refill the carts if desired easily since there is no stupid "smart chip" to go wrong like on the epsons. Another thing I liked is that the ink set is the same as our Canon 9000 wide printer, which means less stocking up on different carts in house all the time.

We got ours before the screen version was available, but if you are letting students use your printer, that may be worth it for your use. I understand they also now have versions with built-in wifi adapter, which I wish we had gotten on ours.

All in all, I love our 5000 and have been very happy the Canon rep was at CompUSA the day we went in to buy an epson and he sold us on the canon. It's been a good decision for us and I recommend the printer for anyone looking for nice photo output at BLAZING speeds compared to most inkjets. No, it's not as archival as the epson, but its also nowhere as slow either!
