Re: First Wedding, What To Charge?

the risks of shooting friend's weddings need to be considered. Also you need to consider the cost of the prints (and proofs) and the album(s). Don't take the task lightly because friends can be even more demanding than regular Clients.
Between $1,500 and 1,800 will be safe for a complete coverage (formals, candids and reception candids).
Good luck and good shooting

then for your real clients, double that rate and you're off to a good start. BTW, I suggest not discounting for friends/relatives--they should be happy to pay your full rate EXACTLY BECAUSE YOU'RE A FRIEND/RELATIVE. I pay all of my own family friend plumbers, painters, realtors, etc... 100% full price because if there's anyone who you SHOULD do that with, it's them, isn't it?

I am learning to second this one whole heartedly....charge them the same price and overservice...give them lots of freebees that cost you nothing that you usually charge for. When you put their album together instead of marking up the album price (no photos) sell it to them at your cost. give them 2 for one deals on prints at your regular prices....give them an extra hour coverage, or a engagement photo.

on the other topic....If they are your friend should you get the freind discount....they should pay 15% more, shouldnt they pay you more as a good friend gesture? If my best freind gets married and says dave how much do you charge....than maybee he will get a discount, if we are really close or it is a family member that has done lots of things for me in the past...then and only then will I be generous. I did my first few weddings for free or cost for family and friends that were on a budget but circumstances were different.
