Lenses for Wedding?

Hi, I plan to carry three lenses, a 17-35mm/2.8, an 85mm/1.4, and a 70-200mm/2.8, with my D1X and F5 to shoot a wedding. Any further suggestions and comments on the lens selection? Thanks! Pei

Swap the 85 for a 28-70 F2.8. If you're shooting film, it will be more useful than the 17-35, and I still use it for most of my shots with the D1x.

Re: Lenses for Wedding?

agreed with david but the 28-70 is a bit heavy, but more usable then the 17-35 which is a bit short. I don't like to change lenses during the ceremony and it looks to me that you're missing the main focal. I use a 35-70 2.8 on Nikon and I have it on pretty much all the time. Rarely I go longer with the 85 for example.
in short a 28-70 or 35-70 is more usable (in general)

Re: Lenses for Wedding?

I've never owned a 'prime' lens.
I don't think you have the time to use one unless for the formal shots possibly.
The 70-200 may be OK on a second body but if you need to swap lenses often, then often you'll miss shots.
I like the 17-35 but Mark and David offer sound advice.

Regards,
Bill.

Re: Lenses for Wedding?

You have chosen 3 ideal lenses in the 17- 35mm, 85mm (1.4) & 70-200mm VR lens for weddings. However, i would rather use a 50mm (1.4) lens than the 85 (1.4) on the D1x taking into account the magnification factor of the D1x.

Why are you using both a D1x & F5 ?

Colour for the D1x & Black & White for the F5 ?

Happy shooting.

Re: Lenses for Wedding?

Thanks all the suggestions and comments.

Here is my original reasoning: the 17-35mm would make up to 26-52.5mm on the D1X, and it will be in the normal range, and 70-200mm/2.8 on F5 will cover the other end for slide film. 85/1.4 (yes, Mark, 50mm would be better) is a backup for both cameras.

Regards,

Pei

Re: Lenses for Wedding?

Pei,

I use prettu much the same set-up you have now only in a Canon system. I have alot of glass but the ones I use most are 16-35 2.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.2, and 70-200 2.8.
Whatever you do, dont lose the 85 1.4! While not as good as bokeh as the Canon 85 1.2 on a FF camera, it still would blow away any zoom made by anyone.
