Wedding Photography Competitions

Hi all,

I'm looking to enter a few wedding competitions. My portfolio is gradually expanding, bussiness is building and buidling and I figure hey, it's about time I start putting my work forward (I'm going to apply for BIPP and SWIPP qualifications too)

Trouble is I can't seem to find anything online.

Anyone know any decent competitions either UK based or online?

Would be much appreciated,

Cheers

Dan

Re: Wedding Photography Competitions

Hi Dan,
Please don't take this the wrong way but why do you want to enter a competition? Isn't the fact that your business is growing proof enough of your ability? I really don't want this to sound like I'm giving you a hard time but I fail to see the worth of these competitions?

I have never had a bride aske to see my awards nor does my afiliation with APA ever come up in our meetings.

Please clue me in! What am I missing???

Joe

Re: Wedding Photography Competitions

Joe,

I think Dan may be thinking a few things here. 1) By receiving an award or good score from a print competition, people will automatically know that he has been recognized by his peers that his work is good/great. 2) He may want to see how some of his favorite images fair with his peers and might like to have a pat on the back in addition to the checks going into the bank! 3) Some photographers compete as a hobby, I suppose. 4) I don't think by "competing", you will gain any business. It's the results that we all seek in any competition. 5) Competing will most likely make you a better photographer as well as give you ideas by viewing what others have entered.

I personally feel the same way. Sorry I can't help with any links over there, Dan.

Re: Wedding Photography Competitions

Rob,
I understand the motivation for press regarding a winning image. I'd probably issue a press release to my local paper or have a big ol' splash page on the front of my site saying how great my images are if I won...then again maybe not. I have looked at www.denisreggie.com ( i think that's the site) We all know who he is and what he's done for our industry, Infact we can all go to his seminars and learn quite a bit about it but I really don't think I'm the type to broadcast such achievements. Admitedly I haven't achieved anything other than a very happy client base!

Denis is a different story and frankly in a different league than most if not all but there are so many photographers (present company excluded) that spend a lot of time and effort making these pretty prints just to brag on their sites that they scored a 9 at WPPI. My clients don't know or care what WPPI is. They judge my work first and my personality second. I have great relationships with fellow wedding vendors who refer me a lot so i just don't know what the competition would do for somebosy like Dan who says his business is growing well and he's doing fine. I'd rather make the prints and show them to clients to get their approval. I really don't need my peers approval about my work. ( i know how that sounds) As long as my family things i'm ok and my business grows each year...i'm cool with that.

I understand the part about using the competiton to make yourself a better photographer but I can honestly say it might make you a better printer? Or you can work with a great printer who makes your work look better???

Who has time to think about all the cool wedding photos there are at these competitions while your actually shooting a job. I don't..that much I know. My head is totally focused around the task at hand, trying to achieve the most creative results each weekend. I use the winter months to reflect back on the past season to find the best images to use in my portfolio or on the website. (i'm printing them as I write this)

I really don't want the tone of my thread to be threatening in any way toward Dan or anyone else who frequesnts these competitions. I just don't understand the draw.

I got an email from a friend the other day saying PDN or Fuji was running a "Top Knots" competition. Looking at the winners last year it seemed like only one person submitted becasue she ran away with several categories. The photos were nice but I would have thought the competiton would have been tighter.

Dan,
I don't know if you get PDN in the UK but you might want to look into that. it's a fairly well respected magazine here in th U.S.

Re: Wedding Photography Competitions

Dan,

Go to the following website: here. Gary was my mentor and an American member of the associations you inquired about. Shoot him an email and I feel certain he would help you out!

Joe,

I agree with everything you are saying but I think the key point I was trying to make is this: There are literally tons of photographers out here. The competition is thick and tough. To be able to say you have won an award will make a bride or someone shopping photogs immediately ear-mark your name. Ask yourself this, If you were scanning a list of shooters on a website, and there were asterisks beside afew names (which are award winners), wouldn't you click on their names to see what's going on?!?!? I certainly would.

Like Dan said in the first post, his business is growing. This is definitely the BEST time for him to stretch out and do this kind of thing, don't you think! Never stop marketing and advertise every chance you get!

(BTW, I didn't find any threatening tones in your post and hope you don't find this offensive. We're just talking shop here, right!?!?!) As with most things, this is why they make chocolate and vanilla.......choices!

Re: Wedding Photography Competitions

Rob,
Well said and your right. I agree it can't hurt. I guess I see so many photographers pushing these competitons as the holy grail of approval and I don't get that.

Having said that I was talking this over with a friend of mine who pointed out that in my bio on my wedding website I list both commercial clients and that I am an award winner. I recieved a few awards from Comm Arts and Print. Now mind you I did nothing to get them. The Art Director for the jobs I did submitted them for his agency but yet they are listed on my site. (trying to come clean here :-) I totally understand why it's important to stand out in a very saturated market. And these competitions are probably a good way of doing that. I've spent the past 2 weeks re-printing my portfolio and updateing all my albums in the hopes of letting my work speak for itself...but how many times have we heard/read that most clients really can't tell a great photographer from a mediocre one. Admittley most of my clients say they book me because they really felt a connection with me personally but they called in the first place because they loved the work....

I'm just not the kind of guy to hang a shingle of the school I went to on the wall (R.I.T) or frame the awards i've recieved. It's too showy for me. Now if my wedding bookings were down or suddenly 10 photographers sprouted up in my town....hehehe

Yes, talking shop, but these posts often lack any emotion. People read your posts and pick them apart at face value and often misinterpret what your trying to say...

Re: Wedding Photography Competitions

to be honest, i just thought it might be a laugh and it wouldn't hurt to win a competition or two eh!??

i wouldn't use it as the crux point of my advertising/website or selling technique.....

i don't have any formal qualification in photography, never been taught, so i do often wander what other photographers, people in the imaging industry think of my work, hence the competition idea....

cheers

dan
