Re: custom WB at weddings?

Easy fellas....let's get back to the topic at hand here....

Bart, what camera are you using and since your shooting raw all day..how many files are we talking about? Do you shoot 400 amazing images and don't have to edit them down at all?

I only wish I was that good.

And for the record I've never trusted a $10 per hour printer at a "professional" lab to print my work or the guy at costco. They couldn't possibly understand how an image was meant to be dodged or burned without being inside my head. Shooting it is half the job. The print is what everyones sees. It's the final product.

Re: custom WB at weddings?

I use several 1DII's and deliver 800-1200 images to the bride. I'm telling a story and showing her a side of her day she never gets to see. I usually edit 10-15% out.

As far as dodging & burning of course that should be done prior to sending it to the lab.

Joe, I looked on your profile to check your web site and did not see one, what type of work do you do and do you have a web site.

Also, it's not a matter of being that good, it's about being realistic.

Re: custom WB at weddings?

I also bring 10 - 2gb cards to each wedding and a portable hard drive to download to. That way I come back to the studio with 2 full copies of each wedding & then burn DVD's before I will even think of re-writing over the cards.

Re: custom WB at weddings?

There's the rub. I shoot the 1dsm2 and raw files for me are around 13MB so (10) 2GB cards will hold about a thousand images. I shoot alot more than that a wedding. I'm shootinng around 3000-4000 images and deliver about 700. I really don't think I could shoot any less and the idea of downloading at the event and reformatting is not appealing to me. I guess I have to pony up for some more cards? I'm amazed you only edit out about 10-15%.

Re: custom WB at weddings?

Great work Joe!

All said and done in a 8 hour day of shooting I have found no matter how many I shoot the delivery seems to be 600-1000 images.

I only download to the portable hard drive as it makes me feel better that I have 2 copies and also identifies immediatly if there is a problem. Also the drive is firewire so it's lightning to offload.

What do you do for reception lighting?

Re: custom WB at weddings?

I'm a huge fan of on-camera strobe. Groan all you want but I honestly feel like I can do more with one light than two. Two always looks so fake and posed. I want natural looking images.

I bounce the on-camera as much as i can all the while dialing in as much ambient as I can hand hold. There always seems to be this sweet spot between the ambient and the strobe where everything is really smooth. It usually takes me a few dozen shots to get the ratios right but then I can shoot all night.

I guess that's my problem. I shoot all night. I'll often shoot 1000-2000 of just people dancing. What else am I gonna do? Pretend to look busy or go to the bathroom all the time? I love to shoot. It's what I do. I'm not a plumber by day and a weddding guy on the weekend. I wish I was! I've made a few plumbers VERY happy lately!

Re: custom WB at weddings?

If you don't have time to process each file in RAW and want to get it right in camera, ExpoDiscs work very well. It hangs on a strap around your neck, or just put it in your pocket. Put your AF into manual, shoot at your light source with the ExpoDisc in front of the lens (like any filter), select WB and the results are great! I just bought one down at SepCon and I'm very impressed. Good luck!
