I used to take lights all the time but only now if I am expecting bad weather.
As well as a light I also used to take a small backdrop to do some formal shots of the bride at home and some formals of the B&G at the reception. That style has gone out of fashion here now so I don't bother with that any more.
I never bothered with a softbox, just a brolly which I always found sufficent. Sometimes I also found just bouncing the light off the corner of a white ceiling also gave a nice even light.
If you get rained out of the park, being able to " plan B" and do some nice shots at the reception isa good stand by. I used to use the light for the guest shots as well which made them look good but you need a radio slave so the inevitable guest shots don't set them off.... Although this is a good way to make sure they buy your shots. :0) I rarely if ever do the shots of the B&G with the guests these days as despite the excitement and time it takes on the day, no one ever buys them except the immeadiate family which you cover anyway.
One thing that used to work having a light at the reception is that I did get a lot of requests for family portraits. People are all dressed up, usually all of the family is there so it can be a perfect time. I think if you were to introduce this idea to your B&g'S you may do well. Perhaps you could even print out some leaflets to give them when they book or leave them on the tables at the reception. I found in the past this Idea went down well with the couples and the guests. As a lot of us shooters often get asked to stay the whole reception, you have plenty of time you can fill in with something that can be profitable. :0)  |
