Re: High School Senior Portraits

Holly,

I clicked on the link and was very pleased to see Ron Kramer was behind it.

I know Ron from The House of Photography for years when he was very active in some forums. I still have a few pictures on my HD when he was looking for opinons on a portal for one of his sites.
He has a deep and thorough knowledge of all aspects of posed photographs and has a unique not often found in Portrait Photographers knowledge of seeing the light and makes excellent use of this knowledge.
If you think that Photo means Light then you must know that this is the most important factor in optaining good results.

In Photography and movies the lighting is often done by highly specialized folks with Ron you will get this knowledge I am sure about this.

Now do I subscribe to his site? No! because I do Street Photography, but if I would do studio I would do it in a New York second, and now that I know about this site I will recommend it to a few who really need to improve to be above the rest.

Move lights closer for some more punch!

Thanks for the comments on Tom Schmidt Photographer pics.

I looked at your photos again and I have some additional comments.

Move your lights in closer!!!

One way to analyze lighting is to look at the specular high light in the eyes. When I review the specular H.L. and shadow I think your light is too far from the subject. The speculars are small and dense (bright white) and the shadow edges are fairly sharp.

Moving the light in closer will accomplish a couple of things:
• Specular H.L. will be larger and more transparent over the entire subject, generally more flattering.
• The shadow edge will be softer which can be good.
• Your light will deliver more punch. If you would meter your shots from head to toe you would find that the illumination is very even over the subject. This is a characteristic of the light moved away from the subject. If you move the lights in close you find that you can create some fall off from the face to the body. This punch will add drama and draw the eye of the viewer to the face.

I was wondering what lights and reflectors do you are using??

Jerry

Leslie, You haven't provided anyone with anything to start a digital photography discussion. Detailed information about lighting and camera equipment and how you took the photos is a minimum requirement. If you're only fishing for compliments on your photos please go to another digital photography forum to post. Mike
