Following Canadian Copyright debate...

Hi,
For anyone following the recent copyright debate in Canada, here's a link to a radio interview with Michael Geist, the one that is raising a battle AGAINST professional photographers. If you click HERE you can listen to Michael Geist ( Who really owns your wedding photos? from the Toronto Star) being interviewed on the Michael Warren show in, I believe, Vancouver this past Saturday (Dec 4). Please take 10 minutes and listen to the show - it starts at the 6:40 mark of the 1PM show.
This is why it is so important that the Canadian government hears OUR side of the debate. Write your MP TODAY!!

Re: Following Canadian Copyright debate...

Last word I heard was that Michael Geist's article and interview has generated lots of consumer letters to the ministers. Photographers have to write MORE letters in order to be taken seriously. Please write your MP today!

Mike,

I was unaware of this issue until you raised it. I think providing readers with more information might be helpful so they can write their MPs.

Here is some sample information that I have collected.

Member of Parliament Contact Information. You can search by Postal Code or name.

British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP) [ QUOTE ]
In fact the law on copyright changed fundamentally with the passing of the 1988 Copyright, Designs & Patent Act. Before then it was the person or company who commissioned the photography who owned the copyright. The photographer had no enduring rights to his own work.

The 1988 Act reversed the situation granting photographers the same rights as had long been enjoyed by authors, painters and other creative individuals. The copyright of the photograph now belongs to the person who took it - the only exception being employed photographers, where it is his/her employer who owns the copyright unless they have a contractual agreement to the contrary.
