What glue for binding photo Canvas to Foam Board?

I take quite a few bridal portraits. I have been using Scotch spray glue adhesive to bind the canvas prints to foam core board, but it is instantly permanent and you have to be very carefull not to misalign the print or you just wasted a lot of money.

Can anyone recommend a glue that has a little play time? I was thinking of contact cement from my local home depot? I had some very old contact cement lying around and it totally warped the foam board I brushed it on. Maybe because it was old as dirt and had seperated?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Just curious. Why not stretch it over a stretcher frame instead?

Actually, that would be due to the solvents in the contact cement interacting with the foam material. I'd investigate other options. I've seen spray mounting adhesive that is supposed to allow the photo to be repositioned at the local frame store but I don't remember the brand. Try googling "archival spray mounting adhesive" or similar.

I agree with Lawrence on this one... streaching is easy to do, it is a superior way to treat the canvas and adds a more fine art element to your work. All you need to do is to go to your local craft store and get the wooden frame slats and a canvas streching tool along with a staple gun and you are good to go! Dealing with foamcore and adhesive is tricky business and usually on worth it. If you have any questions, gimme a call.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you can't use a stretcher frame inside a traditional photo frame? Maybe you could if you didn't mind the end product being twice as thick and bulky as necessary.

Hi Rolland,

I am not shure how you are framing your work... I only made canvas available to my clients if they ordered 16x20 or larger. Once the prints were made and stretched, I had some frame choices for them to choose from. These were generaly the thick gold types of frames that you normaly see with oil paintings etc... these types of frames easily accomodate stretcher frames etc... My town has a wholesale art warehouse where I can purchase pre-made frame of this type for much less than can be bought at a craft shop. Oh well, I hope this is of some help to you. BTW, I no longer offer canvas in my studio. Though I do some weddings, our main stay is B&W portraiture and the largest that we print is 12x12" Good luck with everything!
