| Re: Best way to meter for white dresses with D1x You can keep your highlights with the histogram, midtones and shadows will fall to the side. Basically the skintones will look underexposed by up to 2 stops. The files from the D1x can handle this at moderate ISO's and no larger than 11x14 prints. That's my 2 1/2 years expirience with the camera. The only camera system that handles the white gowns is the Kodak system. The dynamic range is greater but the images are flat compared to other digital cameras. Since Kodak is designed for raw workflow, I can hear a lot of you cringe. I have had no problems with the past 45 or so weddings I've shot with my 760 and 14n, I'm looking for a 720 to go with these cameras. Raw in Kodak is not too much more time consuming than shooting finished files. I have to edit alls files shot, then convert to jpgs, I edit all files shot on the D1x, then renumber and print, the conversion is the only difference. I'm not knocking the D1x, the camera produces great images, just has a problem with whites from shiny fabrics. Since this is the only camera that interpolates in this way, I believe this to be why. A friend that shoots sports and I mean alot of, has the same situation with this, however his clients don't see it as a problem. Some brides also don't see it as a problem, some do! They paid a lot of money for the dress. I've seen blown wedding gowns with other cameras as well, but not to the extent of the D1x. The new S 3 will probably handle the dynamic range of weddings the best, if it does as promised. The best advice with the D1x is to shoot in flat lighting situations as much as you can, on camera flash will be the hardest to keep the gown from blowing out. When I shoot with on camera flash I use the diffuser bounced and set the SB 80DX to .7 to 1 stop under, can't do that in church with wedding party. |
