Canon G1 (stepping stone?)

I really don't think it would take you a whole lot of time to figure out the D30. Frankly, I think the D30 is a much easier camera to manuever around than most of the digicams out there. I stated before the menu issue with my 990. I've had the camera for over a year and still did not learn how to quickly get from point A to B! The D30 is really well designed and I would highly recommend getting the D30 if money is not an issue. You will be able to work much more effectively when you have to make quick changes on the fly.

I appreciate all the feedback thus far, although I feel I haven't been very clear in explaining that it's not usage of the camera itself that I think will take months to master. I'm a technical person so it's not camera usage that concerns me. Instead, I'm assuming that capture, manipulation, and output (the entire process) all combined is what will take a great deal of time to master. Hasn't it been a long process for each of you to really refine workflow and all other associated tasks (e.g. color correction techniques and finding a good lab)to the point that you can actually make the leap from film to digital?

I can't speak for the others, but much of my workflow with film has translated well to the digital world. Considering that your focus is NOT on the issues of the camera, get the D30 and forget about the G1. I find that the D30 actually makes my workload much lighter as I can now find my errors much sooner and correct them immediately.
