Help?

I recently took some pictures with my d30 for a little league team. When I processed them, the faces were very contrasty, to the point the picture was ruined, but the rest of the picture was sharp...the uniforms, the hats...etc. I was using a Canon 28-105@f8 w/420ex. The flash was mounted on the camera using ettl. Everything was on a tripod. The lighting conditions were very overcast, which is why I was using the flash. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
