Need some view points

Had some time today so I updated the "Children's" webpage/gallery.

It's not done, I'm still tweaking... and I need to add 1 or 2 more pictures to fill in the empty space in the thumbnail area. But I think it's pretty neat.

Since I'm the "house" of photography... I think I might go with a "house theme" where each gallery is a different room in the house. (though my studio isn't in a house)
it still could be neat.

Anyway, check out the new kids section and lemme know what cha think.
All shots were done with D30 (except for the "two" appears that appear together.

Ron the entire site is very nice. Forget about the house and its rooms. The galleries are just fine.

I looked up the source to see the Java and was surprised to see the instructions of how to accomplish this.

This approach is much, much better than linking to a bigger picture.

I don't have a Site, but learning how to build one. The problem is: I HAVE NOTHING TO SELL. Up to now.

I did a new main menu today - just upped it now. Still lots of other things to fix... and I'm not "nuts" about the main menu... it works. I like it better than the old composite, but it's not exciting enough. So I may change/update it again when other areas are updated.

It's starting to have some continuity again anyway... I will say - it's TO THE POINT.
I had a lot of words and stuff people just don't take the time to read before. I'm gonna hit em with photos this time and limit the text to just the necessities.

Today is the first I've seen of this thread.

I'd like to say .. Great Photography! Really good expressions and posing. You are a true craftsman with lighting.

May I ask .. on the senior photos in your studio, waist-up shots ... are you using a Tri-Flector type reflector with a main light or a main/fill?

I use a Larson Star with a Tri-Flector and get a similar lighting .. hair light about 1/2 -1 stop higher than my main, depending on hair color, and my background light about the same as my main .. just courious.

Anyways, I wanted to let you know what happened when I went to your link:

I have my monitor set at 800x600 75mhz and I'm on AOL using AOL's browser.

Your welcome page takes as much of my screen as this page on Rob's site does (I can see my desktop left and right of this page). When I click the image for the next page it fills my screen completly, so much that I couldn't see to scroll down without hunting for the
button.

Also, I couldn't use AOL's "back" button. Going back from your Senior page it doesn't take me to your Welcome Page, I came back here to Rob's site. Since I couldn't scroll down I didn't see the back link button on your page .. being located low.

I have my tool bar set to what AOL calls "text only" ... it takes up about 10% of the top of my screen below my mac's menu. Thats about how far below my screen the down button was hidden.

It isn't a big deal with me, but some AOL customers might have trouble ... just wantin ta let ya know ..

Now, tell me about that lighting scheme/ratio your using .. !!

Hi RonB - thanks for the comments.
And for taking the time to explain a typical visit... First I'll let you know that AOL and it's browser and related products are "REALLY POOR". I'd highly recommend you minimize their browser/software and call up IE for your browser once you're connected to AOL.

The site is designed for 800x600 as the lowest res display. I've made it in hopes that it fills the browser screen. Without really needed any scrolling. I wnat everything to be present on the screen. But I dont' know how much actual viewing space AOL's browser provides with their buttons, menus etc.

If you could do a screen capture and email me the pic I'd appreciate seeing how it's formatted. Maybe I should cut the size down a little bit. Not real sure how. Most people use IE. And I have the splash page open a custom IE window that eliminates some of the menus and junk to make more viewable space. (maybe I should remove more menus from this pop up). I don't know if my code works with AOL's browser. I think they now use a version of Netscape, which is already loaded with bugs and problems, then if AOL gets their hands on it and customizes it for their needs it will be a real mess. I've learn from my experience with AOL "not to let anything AOL ever touch my computer again". I would highly recommend IE for Mac.
It's a good bit behind the PC version but will be the best browser out there for features and functionality.

lighting, nothing more than a White lightning Ultra, 600, softbox that I customized by cutting about 18x18" square
hole in the bottom of it. The light that leaks out of this hole hits a belly pan type reflector and is bounced up at the subject.
I use a Photogenic studio master for a hairlight. And a Norman Norlight as a backlight (in some images, but rare).

For fill, I use nothing, or sometimes a large reflector on a stand. I also (for close ups only) hold a reflector in my hand and use it as a mirror to reflect light up into the subjects eyes. It's my #1 goal to make their eyes sparkle.
MY exposure for film is F8, (NPS) when I use the D30 - I use F10. (children were all shot with the D30 except for the pair of pics of the boy). I'm not into the technical stuff - so dunno what ratio I use. We played with that ratio stuff when I worked for other studios before starting my own. I never fuss with it myself. I just shoot, and adjust until I like the results.

I might have to give a tri-flector a try, is it held in place on a stand? I think a Larson star might leak to much light where I don't want it. Is the back of it opaque? (black and doesn't let light out?) is the front of the star rounded outward? I think a soft bix gives more direction control.
