Re: What\'s everybody using???

Hi Carol & others,

I have been using Loxley Colour Labs for the last four months, they too provide a quick turnover of work at a good price (£3.30 for a 12 x 8 or 10 x 8 print)

Loxleys tel number 0141 333 944 (Glasgow)

I am toying with a D1X but the price is too steep at the moment, I expect I will gritt my teeth and fork out.

Regards Vincent

Re: What\'s everybody using???

Hi Vincent,

I used to use Loxley's but I went through a torrid time with them just before Xmas when they messed up a whole pile of images. They reprinted them for me, but the quality was still lacking. They don't use colour calibration either which meant I was constantly having to alter my monitor which threw it out for other work which I do.

I'm using Photobition B&S of Glasgow at the moment and am very pleased with their service AND their prices (which you would love if you are doing packages e.g. 40 10"x10" prints for £41.60)

Re: What\'s everybody using???

Thank you for all the info about labs in Scotland. I too am almost completely digital, I prefer it. I have had problems with my DCS 620x. I think mostly with the Dye Sub printer I am using. Sometimes the prints are fantastic depending on the subject matter and other times I just cant get them right(usually a portrait on a white background). I recently used Pyramid in Edinburgh for the occasional print package, but the last time I used them, I got them (Pyramid) to send the prints direct to my client. The client got in touch with me and said "The prints were so bad we all had a laugh!" This has concentrated my mind somewhat and I am looking for a reliable lad with some standards although I would prefer to print them myself. I am looking forward to buying the new DCS 670 and hope I do not bankrupt myself in the process.

Graham, please e-mail me for more information about Photobition. I don't want to bore all the rest of the folk who reside outside the UK.

Re: What\'s everybody using???

If not what %age do you shoot digitally?? About 80 %

Do you do weddings digitally?? No yet but i'm thinking of offering 600x800 jpeg on a CD instead of 4x6 proofs along with 8x10 dye subs prints

Are you planning on updating your camera (or starting digital) within the next few months?? If so what to?? Yes a Nikon D-1X

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
>Just out of interest, what is everybody using for their digital shoots??

Camon D30, 128mb CF, 1gig MD, usually 28-70 2.8L.

>Is your studio completely digital?? If not what %age do you shoot digitally??

Nope, it's not practicle at this time since shooting digital requires so much more time than shooting film. But I do shoot children digitally during the slow season. If I had to say a percentage - it would be probably about 2%.

>Do you do weddings digitally??

I don't do them anymore, If I did, I would shoot candids and some reception shots digitally, but I wouldn't trust my reputation on shooting the primary wedding images digitally.

>Are you planning on updating your camera (or starting digital) within the next few months?? If so what to??

I may get the next Gen Canon, but it would have to prove itself first. I'm pretty pleased with that I have, so it would have to be considerably better, without costing a whole lot more.

Re: What\'s everybody using???

Rob -- thanks for creating this forum. I will try and behave from now on and let you news guys get some work done!

I'm in a transition to digital right now -- at least 50% of the images from the last couple weddings have been captured with the D30. I am still backing up the posed stuff on film (NPH in a Canon A2, although I haven't had to use it on either of last two -- the D30 images were superior), and I am also shooting a fair amount of Ilford 3200 or TMZ in the A2's. I do wedding stuff with a bit of a journalistic slant, although I'm not a trained photojournalist by any means. In less than four years my rates have risen pretty close to the top of my local Midwest market -- $2-5K US per event. Here are some highlights from last weekend (all shot on the D30):

Prints are being made on the Fuji Frontier. I really would like to be 100% digital by this time next year, but it will involve the purchase of at least one more body, a decent laptop , and a good bit more practice.
