WTS two Canon 40D's

OK, not exactly FS but WTS. I'm thinking about upgrading the 40D's to 50D's now that they are available. I'm just trying to get an indication to see how much interest there is here and how much $$$ they are worth. The upgrade is not a deal breaker for me as the 50D have some features I'd like but I'm not willing to lose a lot of $$ on the switch. I'm quite happy with the 40D's but I'd like to upgrade now as the two 40D's are still under full Canon North American warranty.

These can be with or without 17-85 lens - I bought them with and it's a great lens for the $$.

Let me know if anyone is interested. PLEASE don't email back "how much" - that's what I'm asking, 'cause I don't know what a reasonable price is and I'm not selling on ebay - too much hassle (been burned a few times).

Either post, PM or call me at 1-519-448-1781 during business hours EST.

Re: WTS two Canon 40D's

A friend/semi pro offered his low mileage still warranteed 40D for $800 a while back. He's awaiting a 5D2.

For the right deal I'll take one - sell off my 30D (hoping for $500..but that's just a number I pulled out of my ass).

My oldest 40d, 12.7 months now just got back from canon with a new shutter. I love the 40D, don't see a big benefit (for me) to go to a 50D, and think I want to add a 5D2 next year (and keep 3 other bodies).

So you tell me - is $800 enough for you to part with your 40, add $450ish and get a 50?

FWIW, I recently bought a 40D with grip for $850 and it still has a couple months of warranty left.

YMMV/ScottGee1

FYI, not directly applicable to your question, but a datapoint: When the 40D first came out about a year ago, I sold my 20D body only for $625. That was actually at the high end of the range at the time.

People buying used 40Ds right now are getting a helluva deal. It's still a GREAT camera by any standard. However, technology is like that - anything but cutting edge loses resale value. When I buy a body I mentally write off the entire price.

Re: WTS two Canon 40D's

One of the things I do when I go to sell a camera is to search on E-Bay for the item, then look under Completed items for the sale price of the camera. (Don't be mislead by asking prices, always look for items that actually sold). It gives me a good ball park figure to ask. Then I also check KEH camera web site which has an automated page which will give you what they will pay you for it. Then check KEH listings for comparative prices on the camera model.

That should give you a pretty good idea of what used equipment is selling for.

Agreed. My take is that digicams are essentially computers to which lenses can be attached and similar rules of depreciation should apply. The days of scheduling a Hasselblad over 5-7 years are ancient history.

Re: WTS two Canon 40D's

My assistant picked up a rebel 300D earlier this summer for his girlfriend - $175. Perfect condition with the box, charger, etc. Like new. $175! I had one, paid $900 for it like 4 years ago I think.

I've seen 20Ds for $300 to 350. My last 40 I got NEW from B&H for $940 earlier this summer.

One can pick up a 5D for $1200 if you look a bit, $1300-1400 all day long.

And I think this trend will only get, um, 'worse' before it gets better as there is more competition of late and that's driving down prices on the new stuff and bringing out new stuff more often.

I just picked up a 550EX for $150 shipped caause a guy is going over to Nikon. It's not a 580EX2 like I kinda wanted, but it's 1/3 the price and about 90% the same them.
