cards not recognized in camera

I've had this problem crop up twice now. First was with a SanDisk Extreme III 1 Gb card I bought a little over a year ago. It worked fine but one day my D200 failed to recognize the card (giving an "E" and saying no card present). It would work, however, in my D70. the other day I pulled out the D70 (which I don't use too often now) and it said there was no card so I went to insert a card only to find there was one in the slot. This time the card was Lexar 40X 1Gb card but it was recongnized by the D200. I was planning to get more and larger capacity cards and at first I thought maybe I ought to avoid the SanDisk (at least the faster cards) but with the recent Lexar problem I'm puzzled on a good course of action. Typically I download the cards as soon as I'm finished with the session but I would hate to have the problem crop up before I had a chance to do that. I've tried some of the recovery software to see if it would correct the problem but I was not successful. Any comments would be appreciated.

Jim

Re: cards not recognized in camera

You want to avoid mixing cards between cameras, as that can cause conflicts and corrupted cards. I mark all my cards as to what camera they go in, and stick to that.

Also, always, ALWAYS, format the cards in camera after you've downloaded them.

You seem to be using high quality cards, and that's another rule I have; stick to Lexar and Sandisk cards.

With those three rules, I've never had an issue with cards in my cameras.

Dave, do you think your rule about not mixing cards and cameras applies even if you format the card (even if it is blank) after inserting it? I generally do not mix cards and cameras but do sometimes and my rule is to format a card before anything else if it was last used in a different camera.

Re: cards not recognized in camera

If you format the card for the camera, and the card doesn't have any issues, it should be fine. That said, another rule I have is that I never format, or delete files, in the field. If you keep your cards seperated, then you can format all your cards before you head out for the day and not have to worry about accidentally formatting a card that you've got images on.
