Trip to Japan - Looking at Hyperdrive Space

Hello all,

I am going to Japan next month and have been looking at either the Delkin DVD Burnaway Delkin Devices - Products - DVD BurnAway or the Hyperdrive Space HyperDrive Memory Card Backup Device to take with me. It goes without saying that my images are important but I cant take a lot of gear with me and need to keep whatever I get small. So has anyone any experience with either of these? Or even comments or recommendations?

Thanks in advance

Rick

I used the Digimagic DVD writer, not as well known. I used a lot of DVD analyzing software which measures PI, PO, Jitter errors. Just because a DVD is playable doesn't mean it isn't correcting some errors.

I discovered that it would really only work reliably with DVD+R discs from Taiyo Yuden 8X, Fuji DVD+R was also using them but stamping with their brand name.

I burned two copies of each disc and did verification. It took forever. So instead of enjoying the night life I was held up in hotels burning DVDs, catching up with the days shooting. The verification caught two discs one year that had errors though and so I was able to reburn before formatting card.

It was also a pain to take all those DVD's in suitcase with me.

The best advice I can give wrt DVD burners is: check which brand DVD works best and make two copies.

This year I briefly tried the Hyperdrive SPACE. I discovered that my computer had problems working with it when I plugged it into a front USB 2 port on a panel on my computer. When I plugged it into the back USB port that went directly to motherboard it behaved almost perfectly. I had two test files that didn't match when I checked the data on CF card to the copied to computer via SPACE file...but I was using a very sensitive binary compare program (Beyond Compare for PC). The discrepancy seemed to not affect the picture at all AFAIK, it was just about 8 bytes that were out of place- perhaps in an EXIF header, one pixel, or something(?). Still it concerned me enough, and together with the front plug in problem which no other device I own ever had, was enough for me to return it. I suspect that most people would not have problems with the SPACE however. I was being overly cautious in my testing and was able to detect thresholds lower than might concern most people.

Be aware that it copies fast, but if you want a full verify it is much much longer, not just twice as long. A 2 GB CF 266X card takes 7 minutes for full verify/copy, and a 2 GB 150X SD card takes about 11 minutes verify/copy.

This year I'm going to use my old 80GB Nixvue Vista as secondary as I already own it. Primary will be the CF cards themselves as they recently had dropped in price. As far as carrying around weight and volume, also ruggedness, the CF cards themselves are the best option.

Re: Trip to Japan - Looking at Hyperdrive Space

Had you thought about using your iPod? I have an 80GB Video one and there is plenty of space on it to store a lot of full size images. I've used it to back up my projects from Aperture while on a long trip when I have had my Mac Book pro with me. If you aren't taking a computer, then there is the iPod Camera Connector that may work for you. I don't have any direct experience of using it, but I have read that you can use it with a card reader rather than attaching it to the camera. If you do use the iPod, you could put some movies on it to watch on the flight over, and then erase them as you need the space

If it were really important to me I wouldn't rely on just one sort of storage whatever it was. When we were on a world trip a few years ago I kept a backup on an external hard drive, and then periodically burned two copies to CD, kept one with us and mailed the other one to myself at home! Paranoid, I know, but it stopped me worrying about what would happen if all our stuff was stolen. You can always replace the hardware, but not the pictures!

Have a great trip.

David.

Go with a device like the Hyperdrive. I use a Wolverine 80 GB device that's very similar and have had great success with it. DVD's are too slow and cumbersome. Dave's suggestion about the iPod is good ONLY if you're carrying your laptop. The camera connector is slow, drains the battery on the iPod in about 30-45 minutes, and may leave you with a corrupted card due the juice running out. I carry the Wolverine (no laptop on the photo only trips), about 16 GB of CF cards is various capacities, and have found this to be ideal for me.

Re: Trip to Japan - Looking at Hyperdrive Space

Thanks everyone for your replies, I have decided to go with the Hyperdrive as this is a family based visit and I dont want to spend the time on burning DVD's. Thank you all for your input, it is very much appreciated.

Rick
