SanDisk 16GB formats to 8GB in D200, 5D

I have a SanDisk 16GB card, but it only formats to 8GB in my Nikon D200 and Canon 5D. I am using the latest firmware:

SanDisk 16GB Extreme III compact flash card

Is this expected?

If I recall correctly, Canon recently issued firmware updates to support CF cards larger than 8GB. Perhaps Nikon has done, or will do, the same?

I've updated the 5D firmware just a few days ago to the very latest, and it still formats the card to 8GB.

Yes, unfortunately it's for the top-end models only. I searched the knowledge base at canonusa.com and could find nothing for "16 GB", "capacity", or "compact flash".

Canon has not been helpful. I've written up their response in my blog:
Canon 5D and 16GB SanDisk card

I ran into the same issue, Lloyd.

ScanDisk's web site offers a full product compatibility checker here:
