Strange policy about Canon DPP downloads

I'm puzzled. There is no way to download newest version of DPP from Canon website.
You can download an "updater", but not the DPP software itself?! If it's free, if it's a Canon specific software, if it's bundled with thousands and thousands of 350D, 20D and even ProShots, what's the problem?
Do i have to search both my office and my house, in search of the "original" DPP CD-ROM, everytime i need to check how's DPP evolving?

Re: Strange policy about Canon DPP downloads

Due to bad RAM during an OS update, I had to perform a fresh install of OS X and all programs on my Powerbook. To get DPP current I installed the original download I had saved of version 1.0 since DPP was not on the CD with my 1Ds. Then I install the updates in order. I would love to know how that could be made faster, but I guess Canon gives new camera purchasers the ease of the 'latest' version on disc with the camera. Everyone else has to install each version to get current.

I am not sure what they are protecting. They control what cameras DPP processes and no other brand works and it is free so it boils down to paranoia and control issues, I think my father must work for them.

Somehwere on the Canon website was access to each version of DPP for download with a camera serial number for access. Not sure where that link is now. That is how I wound up with DPP to start with.

Unsure about other cameras

I guess you man RAW files.

I process JPEG captures from Nikon and Olympus through DPP. Date and sort is not supported but otherwise it seems OK.

Nikolay:

This is the link at Canon for downloading the original version of DPP: http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/sdl/dpp-e.html

You'll need a serial number. For the 1D (not sure about the 1Ds) it will be six digits. If you don't own either camera I think you would be safe just making one up for the 1D option so long as the first two digits are 00.

Re: Strange policy about Canon DPP downloads

The "updater" actually is the complete DPP file. They call it an "updater" because you have to have earlier version of any of the other Canon software normally bundled with a camera, like EVU or EOS Capture. You don't need to actually have a prior version of DDP.
