Nikon says you don\'t need Photoshop

Interesting article from Nikon about the fact photographers don't really need Photoshop (it's graphic software).

http://www.nikonpro.com/clear_definitions_main.php

Found this out at www.photoshopnews.com where there's a discussing going on about the "merits' of this suggestion.

Re: Nikon says you don\'t need Photoshop

After reading this I came upon something said

"Optional Professional nik Multimedia filter plug-ins, designed exclusively for Capture, enable integration of popular special effects at the processing level and can be turned on and off with a click in the same way you access other Capture tools."

So where are these optional filter plugins. Is this an optional download somewhere? Sure don't see anything in my NC software.

The NIK filters are for sale from Nikon. See their site for info.

Hmmm. I'm beginning to wonder if I 'need' Nikon.

Seems like I've been waiting forever for my D2X. Maybe I should just chuck the whole idea and take advantage of the $500.00 rebate offer on the Canon 1D Mark II.

Re: Nikon says you don\'t need Photoshop

Nikon has it backwards. Purely a case of Dain Bramage. I love the equipment but the software is shall we say stinky (none of the manufacturers can touch Photoshop). We don't need Capture but we require Photoshop. No its not a just graphics program, it drives our industry. If Nikon and the others would give Adobe the specs for the raw conversions it would even be better. They could work together instead of making Adobe and others figure out the way the files should be processed. None of Nikon software is worth spending money for. The 3rd party software people beat them every time. The 3rd party makers know that they are in competion and must be the best at something. They don't have a captive group of users. They will spend their money for waht ever makes them the most productive. Software like PixelGenius, Noise Ninja, PhotoMechanic and Nik are critical to making images better and improving workflow. They complement Photoshop and make it even more powerfull and useful.

Re: Nikon says you don\'t need Photoshop

Hey, if Capture worked right they might even have a point. 90% of my time in Photoshop these days is spent with the browser, ACR and some basic retouching tools. A dedicated program like Nikon Capture could probably do that for me but no such tool exists with suitable quality and workflow.

But, as it stands, at least on the mac, Nikon Capture is simply unusable junkware. It is extremely slow on my tricked-out dualproc G5, has imho a terrible user interface and even if it were coded properly its workflow still wouldn't hold a candle to photoshop's.

I sincerely wish that Nikon would get its act together on software - it would be great to have a viable dedicated workflow outside of Photoshop - but I can't imagine that happening anytime remotely soon.
