First off, I'd like to say that I've never used any of the equipment you've discussed.
What caught my attention is the *red* light you describe in low lighting. Red is a color which has traditionally been used, especially in the military, to preserve "night vision". There is a technical explanation
at this website.
Here's an example:
If you are using telescope pointing to the sky, and you wanted to read a guide book about the constellations, you should read the book with a *red* flashlight. Using a *white* light would make the transition from stargazing to reading your book much harder. It would take a longer time for your eyes to adjust .
I could see this situation when you're shooting in low light. Reading your settings with red light might be better if you wanted to preserve your vision for focus, composition, or not tripping over your camera bag.
Just a thought...
