I bought this lens to go along with my XTi based 'tough and tumble' setup. It stays in my car for those unexpected photo opportunities. On to the lens.... it takes fairly sharp images with good contrast and color rendition on both my XTi and 5D bodies. The focal length range is also versatile. It is fairly quick to focus and the IS results in 2-3 stops improvement over non-IS especially when shooting at 200+mm. It's focal length range is fairly close to my EF 100-400 L, but it only takes a glance at the images to tell which lens produced them.
While the price is right it only takes about a minute or two to see where Canon value engineered the lens. As the lens finds its focus the barrel rotates making the use of a polarizing filter extremely difficult. You also have to watch how you support the lens with your hand. The IS feature adds about $280 to the lens cost but in my opinion is worth it. There is very little barrel wobble when the lens is extended to 300mm despite the plastic construction. The image seems pretty consistent edge to edge both in sharpness and brightness. I do not notice image sharpness change much as the aperture is closed down.
All in all a decent lens at a reasonable price, and Canon really has hit one out of the park with their IS system.
