Pros: Spot on auto focus, superb color, fast
Cons: Obtrusiveness and weight

This was my first Canon "L" lens and was purchased in 2004. I have used it on the following camera bodies: 20D, 30D, XTi, and 5D. On each camera the performance of this lens just blew me away. I now have 5 "L" lenses and this one is still the all-around best in my opinion. It focuses ultra fast and accurately. At f/2.8 the DOF with fairly close subjects is very shallow (about 3"), but that is a good thing for me. The OOF bokeh is just beautiful. There is absolutely no vignetting at the 70mm focal length (or any other) and full open aperture with the 5D's FF sensor let alone the APS-C sensor cameras. I have newer "L" zooms but this one is still the best for me. Portrait photos can be taken with fairly long camera to subject distance, a plus with shy subjects.

I'm a big fan of Canon's IS technology and this lens is no exception. I gain about 3 stops of stabilization with it at the longer focal lengths. This version of IS requires you to turn off IS when using a tripod because of negative feedback, but once you are used to this very minor quirk no problem. My switches are recessed so I have never had a problem with inadvertent switching IS or AF/MF on or off, or changing to the pan mode.

The down side is short but present. First, this lens is the Off White Canon L color that screams 'photographer present'. I've had one person change their mind about being photographed when they saw the lens. The other down side is the lens becomes very heavy after carrying it around at the zoo all day, but that's my fault.

Yes this is an expensive lens costing more than many DSLR bodies, but boy is it ever worth it. I'd save my money and not settle for the non-IS version, or probably even the newer f/4 model. I can't wait to try it out on my 40D body when I get one.

Pros: Sharpness, speed and solid construction.
Cons: Somewhat heavy and somewhat expensive.

I am a photojournalist and I have three lenses with me at all times, my Canon 10-22, my Canon 24-70 2.8 L and my Canon 70-200 2.8 L IS. I have tried (and still own) the Sigma 70-200, but nothing compares to the Canon at their respective focal lengths. The USM autofocus is extremely fast and accurate - a must for meeting the pressure of having to get "the shot." Image stablization is a bonus for shooting at lower speeds or when my footing is unstable, such as aboard a sailboat. Highly recommended without reservation. Not cheap, but worth every penny.

Pros: Fast low light focus
Cons: weight

I have used this lens for 3 seasons of basketball, no strobe and mixed availble light in high school gyms. The 16x20 prints are remarkable for the situation. I use the Mark2 set on iso1600 and nosie ninja to cleanup the noise.I would recommend this lens to anyone, add a 1.4 extender and you have a great soccer and football lens. I have a 400 2.8 and this lens can do alot it can and more. I have some samples on my site www.proactionphoto.com
