My previous portable digital storage was a FlashTrax 20GB unit, so my impressions are relative to that unit. The Epson is slightly larger and thicker, but no heavier. It makes my bag bulge a little more. But the greatly increased file transfer speed is well worth the cost. The battery seems to have better life, though it's a little soon to tell. It's been a week and I haven't had to recharge the battery, whereas the FlashTrax would not last a week without recharging, even with no activity.
Also, I found myself with both CF cards and SD cards to backup on a recent trip, and no way to back up the SD cards with the FlashTrax, as the FlashTrax would not accept an accessory card reader, (although there is an available adapter, which I didn't have). The FlashTrax was a device unit only, whereas the Epson has both a device and a host capability with the corresponding USB ports, so it could accept an accessory card reader, however it has a SD card slot in addition to a CF slot, so that isn't necessary.
The greatest feature of the Epson is a modern user interface, whereas the FlashTrax has a minimal user interface, and unfortunately no way to upgrade it. I think the main reason I didn't like the FlashTrax was that it seemed to be an orphan, with no upgrade path support.
The P-3000 has a 40GB hard drive, twice the size of my FlashTrax, which I never filled up anyway. There are larger drives available, but I find this size adequate for my needs.
Plus, there is a $100 rebate offer, which clinched the deal for me.
Highly recommended.
