I thought I would get a few of these and try to save a few bucks (I normaly buy D2's).
My initial issue was the ergonomics, nikon has changed the position and usage of many of this cameras functions compared to all other DSLR's they make or have made ie card insertion, focus area selector ond others.
Next is battery life, it is terrible. I have the battery pack and it is still crap with the extra battery.
Then there is focus speed and accusition, even with a 70-200 VR it will miss focus more the any other camera I own even the D100.
All in all this camera is unusable for me and is useless for sport.
As a portrait or wedding tool it is great, but make sure you carry lots of batterys and don't let them move.
By the way we destroyed (shutter) one of these in 10 weeks!

Pros:
Great image quality, compact and easy to carry around, good price
Cons:
Falls behind the D2x in image quality and autofocus. Still a great camera
I bought this camera to replace my D1x, and I really like it. It's a nice camera to carry around, is snappy to use, and takes great images.
It definately doesn't run with the D2x in either performance or image quality (but what does?). But, considering that the D200 costs less than 1/3rd of what a D2x does, it's a pretty good buy for most.
Can't wait to get my hands on a D300
