Pros: Sharp! Fast! Sweet!
Cons: Cost. Too short of a zoom range to be used as a universal lens.

Another of my favorite lenses, this one is a workhorse. It seems sharper than my previous wide angle zoom nikkors and on par with the 85mm 1.4 which I feel is as sharp as they come. The equivalent of a 25-82mm zoom on 35mm format, it has a very useful range of focal lengths. This is the closest thing to a "general purpose" lens I have found (although I wish it were longer on the top end).

When shooting I usually carry 2 cameras. My "ready for anything" pair of lenses include this one , the 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor and the 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor. While I love my Nikkor long glass and have speciality applications for other lenses, this combination handles 80% or more of my daily assignments.

One area I find digital photography in general has a tough time with is aerials - I still use 6x7 Pentax for anything requiring extreme enlargement. However, this is lens suprizes me in its ability to retain detail and clarity. That being said, I admit to viewing my digital files at unreasonable magnifications of 100-400%.

Drawbacks, 1. will not cover 35mm sized film or digital sensor (only current nikon digital sensor size), 2. not long enough for my taste to be used as a general purpose "one-lens-only" situation (but then, nothing is that meets my requirement for sharpness at 2.8).

I like how nikon has used the 77mm filter diameter for many of its top end lenses. This way one set of 77mm filters or adapters can be used throughout the system. Lenses I own that this applies to include the 12-24mm, 17-55, 85mm 1.4, and a range of 70/80-200mm 2.8's.

Pros: Useful with D3 full frame from aprx 25mm - 55mm w/o vignetting
Cons:

Useful with D3 full frame from aprx 25mm - 55mm w/o vignetting. In order to use this lens with full frame you must first turn the DX auto-sensing to OFF and select FX format - full report to follow after more use
