Talking Canon 50D support in LR 1.4?

I have not upgraded to LR 2.x as I didn't see enough to make it worthwhile. But now I have a 50D, which LR 1.4's RAW converter cannot recognize. Camera raw 4.6 supports this camera... but LR has no option to use 4.6, and is stuck at 4.4.

So -- any way to hack LR 1.4 so it can recognize 50D raw files?

Mathew

Download the latest DNG convertor. Convert your 50D files to DNG and then import into LR 1.4. I haven't tried this but this has been a common way to get new cameras recognized by older versions of ACR. I would assume LightRoom works the same way. Since the DNG convertor is a free download, you might as well try. I'd also argue that the Lightroom upgrade is well worth the cost. It adds substantial productivity in a variety of areas.

Thanks for the DNG tip -- will try that. Can you say more about the productivity improvements you see?

Thanks,

Mathew

Re: Canon 50D support in LR 1.4?

- better filtration UI
- local retouching & gradient effects
- multi-monitor support
- output sharpening
- nifty Photoshop integration for panoramas
- more optimal color profiles for handling RAW images

Martin listed the key items well. I like the much improved integration with Photoshop, especially for panoramas. I also like the better directory display options in the "Folders" section of the Library module. Relating what's in your Lightroom Library to what's on your disks makes more sense and is easier to manipulate when needed.

Re: Canon 50D support in LR 1.4?

Thanks guys -- wanted to see if I had missed anything. These are all good improvements for LR, but they are not enough for me (personally speaking -- your mileage may vary) to upgrade this time around. Today, I simply export from LR to Photoshop and finish processing there... and PS can do all of the new LR editing things, and a lot more LR can't do at all today. As for the LR file handling... I have a file organization system that I can batch run in Bridge so those improvements are nice but but not compelling.

The net: I am likely to sit out this upgrade and see what's on the cards for LR3.
