Re: C1 Pro switching to Lightroom or Aperture?

EOS Utility should be all that you need. I don't (yet... waiting for the 1dsMkIII) use a 1D series camera but I'm fairly certain that all of them tether in the same basic way. I use a 5D and 30D. EOS Utility gets the files from the camera into the computer; and it allows control of the camera. You specify which program (if any) you want EOS Utility to link to in order to actually view/edit the files. That might be one of the Canon programs or most any other image browser/editor. Lightroom is a little bit different in that it doesn't require any sort of communication from EOS Utility. You just tell Lightroom to watch a particular folder. It will autoimport any file dropped into that folder. Just have EOS Utility drop the camera files into that folder.

agree... (haven't remove Aperture though)

It would be nice if Lightroom tethered directly.
Athough I see the merits of having Lightroom "move" (copy files to another folder and then delete from the watched folder) , it would be helpful if you could set Lightroom to just "copy" files in the Watched folder and then NOT delete them.
That way, one could capture using Capture One and still keep the Capture One session intact.
I find for tethering, I still use Capture One (the easiest) and Lightroom for most everything else unless, I wish to see a developed comparison between Lightroom and Capture One.

Between Aperature, Lightroom and Capture One, there's a really great software in there somewhere. :-)

Re: C1 Pro switching to Lightroom or Aperture?

Although I had been using almost exclusively C1 Pro since v.1 on the Mac (with Magne Nilsen's profiles), and still prefer it for portraiture with 1Ds and 1Ds2 files, I feel that in certain respects its development has been lagging and now use Lightroom 1.1 (and ACR 4.1 in CS3) quite frequently. It has much to offer for tonal and color correction, and well beyond that, and is quite intuitive to use. Although I sometimes use Aperture to good effect on occasional images if I'm unsatisfied with the conversions via other converters, it has been difficult for me to accustom myself with it UI, and if I'm not mistaken, background processing is still not available, allowing you to work on the next image. But I do find the quality of its Raw conversions commendable and like their feel.

Re: C1 Pro switching to Lightroom or Aperture?

I was initially reluctant to try Aperture because of it's hardware demands and "different" interface compared to Capture 1 and canon DPP, however I am now hooked and use it from everything from browsing, rating, building web galleries and final output. It works tethered using Canon Utility to get the images into the computer and the free to download from Apple "Aperture Hot Folder" script that automatically imports each new capture into the Aperture window and moves the selected image ahead 1 place. Yes it supports dual monitors. No it's not fast enough but are any of them and now with a 1Ds mk 3 ?

I used CS1 for years, and bit the bullet and went to LR. God, do I love that program. I get things done much better and FASTER with LR.

Re: C1 Pro switching to Lightroom or Aperture?

I've been using C1pro for a long time now for the conversion of the raw files of my Canon 1DsMK2, 1Ds, 10D and 1DMK2 cameras. So far, I`ve been very content with the output. Regardless of all the features and intuitive handling in favor of LR, the quality of the conversion in terms of rendering and preserving details, colors, tonal gradiation, noise etc. is the most important point for me. previous versions of ARC did not meet the quality of C1 in this regard. This was confirmed in many reviews. The situation may have changed now with the new version of ARC implemented in LR. Unil now I have not seen a side-by-side comparison in this regard. So I'm not sure if I will switch. Of course I would be very interested in the experiences of users who did a comparison of the output.

Regards

Wolfgang
